7.1 Million in Danger
“Whoever saves one life, it is as though he has saved all of mankind.” [Qur’an 5:32]
A total of 7.1 million people face catastrophic levels of food insecurity as the region endures its third consecutive failed rainy season. Families have lost their livestock and source of income.
Somalia, one of the worst hit countries has been facing a thirty year old conflict that has resulted in political and economic instability. As a result, A total of 1.5 million children under 5 face acute malnutrition; nearly half a million of these children face severe malnutrition and may be at risk of dying without immediate treatment.
As people and their livestock continue to die of hunger, the region is on the brink of famine that could be declared at any moment. The last famine in 2011 was responsible for the death of half a billion people and a devastating loss of livestock.
